This piece was recorded on a street piano in downtown Denver, at 8:30 a.m. on June 13, 2014.
Each summer, the city of Denver places several public pianos on the streets. This particular piano is located at a busy corner, with several streams of cars, cyclists and pedestrians moving in each direction around it. I thought it would be an interesting place to film and record during morning rush hour, so I arrived early to capture the moment. The music was inspired by the ebb and flow of morning traffic around me as I was playing. You can also watch a video of this performance here.
This music is mostly improvised in the moment, but the last 2 minutes are from a piece I made up previously, which I've played a few times in different settings.
Due to the spontaneous nature of this recording, it wasn't possible to ensure that all technical variables were optimized - meaning, the piano is a bit out of tune and has some clanky-sounding notes, and you'll hear occasional audio distortion on the loudest parts. It is what it is. I hope you enjoy it, and thank you for listening.
